Glaucoma is a medical condition characterized by damage to the eye’s optic nerve usually due to increased pressure in the eye. The researchers identified 114 genetic variants associated with glaucoma, many of which are novel.

By examining the genetic information of nearly 6,000 individuals, researchers identified 3 genetic regions associated with an increased risk of developing keratoconus, an eye condition characterized by thinning of the cornea.

Retinal detachment

Retinal detachment is a serious medical condition that occurs when the retina is pulled away from its normal position and damaged in the process. The study discovered 11 genetic variants associated with retinal detachment.

Age-related macular degeneration

Degeneration of the macula is one of the leading causes of vision loss among the elderly, affecting nearly 160 million individuals worldwide. The researchers identified 69 genetic variants associated with age-related macular degeneration.

Optic disc size

A small optic disc size is correlated with vulnerability of optic nerves to various degenerative diseases. This study analyzed the genomes of over 95,000 individuals of European ancestry and discovered 115 genetic variants associated with optic disc size.
